Mission:
The primary purpose of the Kishwaukee Dairy Herd Improvement
Association is to afford members an economical method of getting
information they can use in improving the producing efficiency
of their herds. The Kishwaukee DHIA also strives to further
educate the cooperating herdsmen, to help 4-H members and youth
with their dairy projects, and to ultimately advance the dairy
industry.
Membership:
The Kishwaukee DHIA currently consists of
14 herds (approximately 1,400 cows) from DeKalb and Kane counties in Illinois. The membership
rates in the association are determined by the different tests
taken for determining the total pounds, fat, and protein in
the milk of the cows.
Tests include:
2X Test - tested twice/day (once during the month).
AP Test - a.m. or p.m. test only (one time in the month).
O/S Test - owner/sampler, owner tests his own herd.
Leadership:
Otto Heisner, Esmond - President
Five board members elected to three year staggered terms. |

Benefits:
The Association maintains two employees including a Supervisor
for herd testing and a Bookkeeper. Each cow in all the cooperating
herds is tested on a monthly basis. This testing service through
the Association involves sending the milk samples and working
closely with Dairy Lab Services, Inc. at Dubuque, IA. The cow/herd
test results are then sent by DLS to the individual herdsmen.
The Kishwaukee DHIA also helps sponsor various informational/promotional
activities throughout the year such as the annual meeting for members,
a dairy breakfast,
milk auction, and pen & stall awards at the 4-H fairs.
